Brainard Lake

This past Saturday we enjoyed our first spring trip to the mountains. We've been itching for warmer temperatures to accomodate hiking or camping and were pleased to take in the mountain experience without too much snow beneath our feet. Come on summer! We joined our friends Nate and Liz in Boulder for a delicious brunch and then took a scenic drive through the foothils to Brainard Lake. Brainard Lake is in the Roosevelt National Forest bordering Indian Peaks Wilderness.

We planned to hike one of many trails surrounding Brainard Lake. Due to snow bordering the entrance road, we were unable to make it to the trailhead. However, by the looks of things the trails were not yet hikable due to leftover winter snow! We parked at the road blockade and enjoyed a leisurely walk on the road to the lake. It was so refreshing to breath the mountain air and take in the signature smell of the evergreen trees. We passed a thawed, beautiful lake on our way to Brainard Lake.

Although it did not feel as though our elevation gain was too great, the change was noticable as Brainard Lake was still frozen at 10,330 feet. We enjoyed great views and a small challenge as we hiked the snow-covered access road around the lake.

Although not as obvious, the great views continued on our hike back to the car. One of my favorite mountain experiences is being surprised by an unexpected view when taking a moment to stop and look back. Such was this experience...

We had a fabulous time and look forward to our next mountain trip. I guess we have a few weeks to wait before finding dry, clear trails!
